Thanks for a great article. I have always liked Mion's work every since I read the March 1964 issue of National Geographic magazine. That cover is my absolute favorite Mion painting. Just for fun, I recently used Adobe Photoshop to create a "correct" version of the cover showing the pilot performing the EVA and not the command pilot, as in Mion's original.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Since you like the March 1964 National Geographic issue, you may enjoy my post titled "Moonshot 1970". Funny, I never looked close enough to realize the cover illustration has the commander making the EVA. I would love to see your rendition.
BTW - I think you'll find that the cover illustration was actually painted by the other artist assigned to the article - Davis Meltzer. If you don't have your copy handy, it can be found on the Internet Archive at the link below. See page 369 for the caption and credit. (p 61-62 of the scanned document.)
This is a wonderful article. I do have some of the magazines Dave used in this story. It was nice to see this wonderful story and I'm glad Dave got to meet him!
Brilliant article Dave, thank you!
Thanks for writing a terrific, in-depth profile of Pierre Mion. His artwork is really amazing and beautiful!
